Love your thinking Nick. We need more of this type of thinking to move beyond the words of reinventing education

Yes, that is what I am trying to do. If you look closely, what I am doing here is rhetorical analysis with a growing appreciation for computational thinking and AI agency. All little old. A little new. Thus, thoroughly pragmatic.

Thanks for sharing these observations! I’m curious how students felt about their less “efficient” learning. Did they find generative thinking to be more engaging and even fun?

Good question. As long as you adjust your deadlines and attending expectations, students do not feel the pressure to produce---and embrace the process. Since the pandemic, I have been giving myself freedom to assign less, and do more in class, undergirded by a shift in my grading techniques. I keep reminding myself that my students are developing valuable skills, and design methods of measuring those skills. Rather than deferring all that measurement to some final assignment due several weeks out. The overall vibe is very different these days... Students really enjoy it.

I really resonate with this idea of seeing AI as part of a broader trend that encourages the re-imagining of educational techniques – not around AI, but around students. Technology, in this view, is neither poison nor panacea, but one tool in a toolbox that can result in maximal learning outcomes for students and even enjoyment in the pursuit of those outcomes.

The vibes are different, indeed! 💯

Yes I am. I have been there for a while, but just started to really engage this past weekend. It is a fun space right now. A much better notes experience for teachers than what Substack can offer. My handle right now is educatingai.
